Black History Month Events in February at GCC
Lectures, art displays and a free "make-a-bracelet" workshop will celebrate African American culture at Glendale Community College during February's Black History Month. All events will be held in the GCC Student Union and are free and open to the public. Parking is also free. GCC is located at 6000 W. Olive Ave. in Glendale.
Tues., Feb. 20, 10:00 a.m., a speaker from the Yoruba Cultural Center will present a program on African culture.
Tues., Feb. 20, 11:00 a.m., the Glendale Bead Museum will display African art and host a free bracelet-making workshop with beads of African design.
Wed., Feb. 21, 11:00 a.m., "Chicken Soup for the African-American Soul," presented by popular local speaker Bari Ellen Ross, an editor and contributor to the popular book Chicken Soup for the African American Soul.
Forensics Team Wins Many Awards at California Competition
In late January, six talented forensics students from Glendale Community College, each competing in several categories, won a total of 27 awards at the Southern California Urban Debate League Competition at California State University, Fullerton. The awards included 11 first place wins and eight second place wins. Competitive categories included Persuasive Speaking, After Dinner Speaking, Informative Speaking, Prose Interpretation, Poetry Interpretation, and Communication Analysis. "This is one of several important regional competitions in which our students must compete to accumulate enough points to compete in the national competitions later this year," said Communication Professor and Forensic Coach Kirt Shineman. "As of now, some of our team members already have enough points to go to nationals." GCC is located at 6000 W. Olive Ave. in Glendale. Brazilian Guitar Quartet to Give Free Concert, Feb. 15
Latin music from Brazil, Argentina, Cuba and Spain will be performed by Brazilian Guitar Quartet "Quaternaglia," Thurs., Feb. 15, 7:00-9:00 p.m. in the Glendale Community College Performing Arts Center. Formed in 1992, the quartet quickly gained renown and popularity, performing in Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, Cuba, and in major cities across the U.S. It has won several international awards and launched its first DVD during the 2005-2006 season. The quartet will also teach a master class on Wed., Feb. 14, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. in MU2-151. A solo guitar master class will be presented on Thurs., Feb. 15, 10:00 a.m. to noon in MU2-151. All these events are free and open to the public. GCC is located at 6000 W. Olive Ave. in Glendale.
