MLK Celebration at GCC Features Phoenix Councilman, Jan. 18

The role of politics in the civil rights movement of the 1960s and in civil right issues today will be explored in a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. commemorative event at Glendale Community College on Thurs., Jan. 18. Phoenix Councilman and former Vice Mayor Michael Johnson will speak from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the GCC Performing Arts Center, in the northeast quadrant of the campus, 6000 W. Olive Ave. in Glendale. Johnson will address these issues from the perspective of his long career in local politics and public service. He will also discuss how Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the civil rights movement have affected his own life. Johnson is serving a second term as a Phoenix City Councilman. He retired from the Police Department in 1995 after serving 21 years as a police officer, community relations officer and detective. He is now president and CEO of Nkosi Inc., a security service. This event is free and open to the public.

"American Shaman" to Give Free Presentation at GCC, Jan. 24

Called the "Marco Polo of psychology" and an "American Shaman," Dr. Bradford Keeney will speak about worldwide healing techniques in a free public presentation Wed., Jan 24 at 7 p.m. The community is invited to hear and learn from this inspiring speaker in the Glendale Community College Performing Arts Center, 6000 W. Olive Ave. in Glendale. Following an academic career as a family psychotherapist working at the renowned Karl Menninger Clinic and other institutions, he spent more than a decade traveling the globe, listening to shamans, healers, and medicine people. Elders of indigenous peoples throughout the world—including the Kalahari Bushmen, the Caribbean Shakers of St. Vincent, the Guarani Indians of the Amazon, and the Japanese Seiki Jutsu healers—have embraced Keeney as an elder and spokesperson for their ways of ecstatic shamanism. He now travels the world sharing their practices. The result of Keeney's work is a broad and intense field study of healing and shamanism, chronicled in his critically acclaimed Profiles of Healing, an eleven-volume encyclopedia of the world's healing practices.
