Veep's Corner

GRAnother successful semester is nearing a close. Amidst all of the operational activities here at GCC this semester, many of us have been involved in work teams for the 21st Century Maricopa project. Despite full plates of projects on campus, we all see the importance of being involved in this initiative and carrying on GCC’s tradition of being a leader in the District. The outcomes and strategies proposed via the 21st Century project will have great impact on how we do things at GCC. Will we be allowed to continue building computers and saving in excess of 50 percent of the capital costs per machine, or will we be required to only purchase assembled machines from a single vendor? Will there be a student technology fee that we have to manage in a restricted account, or will the colleges continue to have some flexibility in how we spend enrollment growth and technology funds? Will things we have implemented in the past need to be quickly converted to a District standard and, if so, where will those funds come from in order to do so properly?

There are many more questions that abound not only within OIT, but ALL areas of the College. So, while we in OIT are all accustomed to responding as quickly as possible to the emerging technology requests of our faculty and staff, we ask your patience and indulgence as we await some of the salient technology outcomes from the 21st Century Maricopa project.

The OIT Newsletter has been a great success since we launched it just over a year and a half ago. Hopefully you’ve enjoyed the articles and the approach we took to keeping the campus community informed about the goings on in OIT. However, the OIT newsletter staff has concurrently worked on bringing the Gaucho Gazette along as a strong communication tool as well. In fact, Nanette Espinocilla and Lori Bush have divided their time between the two publications. But the Gazette has become so strong in content and format under Trish Vogel that it no longer makes sense to have a separate newsletter just for OIT. Consequently, this will be our last issue. Look to the Gazette for articles on OIT in the future as well as from other areas of the college.
