What's the Point with SharePoint ?

You may have heard talk of a new tool called SharePoint coming soon to GCC. Just exactly what is it and what can it do for you? In a nutshell, SharePoint is a secure web based tool that makes it easy to organize, edit, share and collaborate on all types of content with other members of your department or functional group. This content can include documents, spreadsheets, reports, meeting minutes and agendas, project lists, announcements and discussion boards. SharePoint is accessed using your eGCC account via your web browser so you will have access to your “web office” through the GCC VPN anytime, anywhere that you are online.

sharepointImagine being able to update your department’s public or internal website without having to start a work order – SharePoint provides the framework for you to edit the text and images yourself using a simple WYSIWYG editor. There is no need to know anything about web page design, if you can use a word processor you will be able to update your SharePoint web page.

College Application Services has been working with the College Research Services to develop an internal SharePoint site for use by the HLC Self Study teams. This site is where the teams will collaborate on all of the documentation needed for GCC’s accreditation visit in 2012.

So when can you expect your department’s own web office, better known as a SharePoint site? We expect construction to begin by Fall semester. Meetings will be scheduled with department and organizational groups through May to identify the content people use and share to provide a foundation for the redesign of GCC’s SharePoint environment. So mark your calendars when you get that call and have your web office built according to your needs!
