Requirements for the Aerobics/Group Fitness Instructor Certificate

To receive your Aerobics Instructor Certificate of Completion, students must complete the required courses listed below at Glendale Community College, earn a "C" or better in each course and have a GPA or 2.0 or better.

Required Courses

The following courses are required for Aerobics/Group Fitness Certificate. Once completed, student will have earned two certificates, Personal Trainer and Aerobics/Group Instructor. Please note that they are listed in the suggested order in which they should be taken.

Course Descriptions

FON 105 – Principles of Nutrition for Personal Trainers (3 credits)

Basic principles of nutrition for the prospective fitness professional. Overview of health and wellness and its relationship to personal trainers. Emphasis on general principles of nutrition for health and fitness. Topics include: basic nutrition principles using the current food plans and dietary guidelines, label reading, estimating calorie and nutrient needs for health, fitness, sport, and weight management

PED 112 – Professional Applications of Fitness Principles (3 credits)

Basic principles of fitness for the prospective fitness professional. Learn how to develop a personalized fitness program that includes body composition, cardiovascular exercise, weight training and stretching programs. Get hands-on experience conducting fitness assessments and muscular strength evaluations.

PED 125 – Exercise Science (3 credits)

Discover major factors related to the movement and function of the human body. Topics include anatomy and physiology, exercise physiology, and biomechanics in addition to general skeletal and muscle anatomy as it relates to exercise

PED 128 - Methods of Teaching Low Impact Aerobics (2 credits)
PED 129 - Methods of Teaching Step Aerobics & Muscle Conditioning (2 credits)

Note: PED 128 and 129 must be taken concurrently.

Learn specific, specialized instructional techniques for teaching group exercise including planning and teaching Aerobics, incorporating techniques for cueing, use of music, step, high and low impact aerobics, warm-up and cool-down. Prepares student for certification in the profession. Students must have a minimum of 2 years participation in aerobics and group exercise classes.

PED 130 – Strength Fitness: Physiological Principles & Training Techniques (3 credits)

Learn concepts related to strength physiology, performance factors, training recommendations, exercise techniques, and program design. Emphasis on benefits derived from strength training and strength training principles.

PED 140 – Principles of Safe Exercise (1 credit)

Overview of safety concepts and principles for the exercise professional. Includes injury prevention, safe use of equipment, contraindicated exercises, proper stretching techniques, basic first aid principles including CPR, AED and emergency procedures.

PED 139 - Practical Applications of Personal Training Skills & Techniques

Become proficient in personal training skills including effective communication, client assessment, fitness testing, goal setting, program design, and program implementation. Includes Personal Training Internship using hands-on experience with clients in the GCC Fitness Center.
