February 3 - March 31, 2013
GCC competed in the 2013 RecycleMania tournament from February 3 - March 31, 2013. RecycleMania is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. Over a 10-week period, schools report recycling and trash data which are then ranked according to who collects the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, or have the highest recycling rate.
GCC is competing in the following categories:
- Stephen K Gaski Per Capita Classic. Schools compete to see which can collect the largest combined amount of paper, cardboard and bottles and cans per person. The Per Capita Classic is the original RecycleMania competition. Weekly waste and recycling data is listed on the chart below.
- Waste Minimization. Schools compete to see which produces the least amount of municipal solid waste (both recyclables and trash) per person. This competition is intended to reward those schools that generate the least amount of combined waste and recyclables, emphasizing reuse and source reduction over recycling.
Our cumulative GHG (Greenhouse Gas) Reductions during the competition are 59 Metric Tons of CO2 Equivalent, or 12 cars off the road, or the energy consumption of 5 households.
