February 5 - March 31, 2012
GCC competed in the 2012 RecycleMania tournament from February 5 – March 31. RecycleMania is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. Over a 10-week period, schools report recycling and trash data which are then ranked according to who collects the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, or have the highest recycling rate. Weekly waste and recycling data is listed on the chart below. GCC is competed in the following categories:
- Stephen K Gaski Per Capita Classic. Schools compete to see which can collect the largest combined amount of paper, cardboard and bottles and cans per person. The Per Capita Classic is the original RecycleMania competition. Weekly waste and recycling data is listed on the chart below.
- Waste Minimization. Schools compete to see which produces the least amount of municipal solid waste (both recyclables and trash) per person. This competition is intended to reward those schools that generate the least amount of combined waste and recyclables, emphasizing reuse and source reduction over recycling.
During the competition, GCC recycled 37,440 lbs. or 18.72 tons of recyclables. GCC set a new recycling record of 13.43 tons in February 2012, increased recycling throughout the competition, and reduced waste with the Zero Waste Pilot Program.
GCC placed in the top 10% earning a 15th place finish in the Waste Minimization competition. This is a notable achievement for a first-time participant in this competition. The goal of waste minimization is to reduce overall waste (trash plus recyclables). As you can see from the results, our placement increased in the other categories as a direct result of our success in waste minimization.
Our cumulative GHG (Greenhouse Gas) Reductions during the competition are 35 Metric Tons of CO2 Equivalent, or 19 cars off the road, or the energy consumption of 9 households.
