2011 RecycleMania
February 6 - April 2, 2011
GCC competed in the 2011 RecycleMania tournament from February 6 - April 2. RecycleMania is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. Over a 10-week period, schools report recycling and trash data which are then ranked according to who collects the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, or have the highest recycling rate.
GCC competed in the Stephen K Gaski Per Capita Classic. Schools compete to see which can collect the largest combined amount of paper, cardboard and bottles and cans per person. The Per Capita Classic is the original RecycleMania competition. Weekly waste and recycling data is listed on the chart below.
During the competition, GCC recycled 41,620 lbs. or 20.81 tons of recyclables. In the Per Capita Classic competition (largest amount of recyclables per person), we placed 324 out of 363 schools. In the Gorilla Prize competition (highest gross tonnage of recyclables), we placed 251 out of 363. More importantly, GCC heightened awareness for recycling on campus. During the competition, we reached a new recycling record of 11.79 tons for the month of March.
