Science Olympiad

GCC hosts the State Finals of Division C Science Olympiad. This is a statewide competition for high school age teams in over twenty different events. The events emphasize teamwork, critical thinking, and problem solving and include all aspects of science and technology. For more information, contact Dr. Karen Conzelman

Afterschool Science Program

GCC elementary education majors enrolled in BIO 297AA (Volunteerism for Biology) teach a weekly afterschool science program for 3rd graders at Barcelona Primary School in the Alhambra School District. They use an activity-based curriculum designed by Hands-on-Science Outreach (HOSO). For more information, contact Dr. Karen Conzelman

Arizona-Nevada Academy of Science

The Arizona-Nevada Academy of Science is a regional scientific association. The organization strives to stimulate scientific research and education.

Among the activities of ANAS are those designed to encourage students in the sciences. These include grants for high school, undergraduate, and graduate student research projects and an undergraduate scholarship.

The ANAS also encourages students to present their research either as a poster session or talk at the annual meeting. Awards are given for the Best Student Papers.

The ANAS also recognizes excellence in teaching with annual awards for Outstanding Science Teacher at the elementary, middle school and high school level.

The ANAS publishes a research journal, The Journal of the Arizona-Nevada Academy of Science, twice annually.

Bridges to the Baccalaureate Degree

The Bridges program is a collaborative effort between Arizona State University West and five of the Maricopa Community Colleges. The program is funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health. It is designed to encourage underrepresented minorities (African-American, Native American, Hispanic American and Natives of U.S. Pacific Islands) to pursue careers in Biomedical research.
