Try it Out - Get Some Experience

Interested in Teaching?
  • Volunteer in a classroom
  • Tutor or TA
  • Offer to be a grader

Interested in Research?
  • Enroll in a special projects class
  • Volunteer in a research laboratory
  • Do an undergraduate research project
  • Attend seminar programs and/or journal clubs
  • Do an internship or apprenticeship

Interested in Health Professions?
  • Volunteer in a medical office, hospital or emergency room
  • Ask to "shadow" someone in the career you are interested in for a day

Work experience will help you to evaluate your career choice.

It will also make you a more competitive applicant to graduate and professional programs. Admissions departments want to be sure that they are selecting students will complete their program. Students who have first-hand experience with what the profession entails are more attractive candidates.

By acquainting an employer with you and your abilities, such experience may also lead to a job in the future.
