Course Description:
Computer-aided layout design and re-design for an existing company identity system.
Prerequisites: ART100, ART169, or permission of instructor.
Course Competencies:
Use of diverse software programs to design and re-design existing company identity systems as well as produce comprehensive and creative art, in order to meet said company's communication and marketing needs.
Course Outline:
(week 1)
Introduction/Lecture
Discuss Graphic Design
Discuss different techniques
i. Stylized
ii. Simplistic
iii. Minimalism
Discuss target audience
Assignment:
i. Research existing perfume company
ii. Redesign logo- 12 sample layout (20 for x-credit)
(week2)
Logo designs- Lecture about logo types
Go over existing perfume company research and discuss logo designs
i. Typography
ii. graphic
Choose a logo design to work on
Begin work on logos on Photoshop and other methods
(week 3)
Design Grid- Lecture on design grids and how to apply them
Discuss designs for company stationery
Re-work logo for stationery and letterhead designs
ASSIGNMENT: 12 grid samples for class critique
(week 4)
Stationery Designs-Lecture on types of designs used
Discuss and critique grid samples
i. Did they meet design criteria
ii. Was the grid helpful
Complete designs for stationery/letterhead system for existing company
i. Letterhead
ii. Envelopes
iii. Vehicle designs for x-credit
Discuss designs and critique
Re=work designs if necessary
(weeks 5)
CLASS PRESENTATION OF DESIGNS AND COMPANY REPORT
Each student will make a presentation of their company re-designs and discuss the research of their company
Attendance is Mandatory
This class meets only 10 times in 5 week sessions thus every class is important.
All work must be turned in on time. Class participation is encouraged. You will be graded on your participation in class discussions and critiques. Each student must be present at their class critique to receive complete credit for each project. Critiques are based on design criteria and are not personal. Each project must meet design criteria for full credit. Remember, learning to critique art is an essential in learning to produce art.
This class will mostly be centered on development of ideas and concepts as well as learning to establish design function and purpose.

Sketch book
Layout paper 9” x 12”
Pencils & erasers (gum and or white erasers)
Color pencils
Markers
CD's for burning
Notebook binder for notes
Mat boards/foam core
Glue sticks or white glue

Attendance: 15%
Projects: 25%
Class participation: 25%
Final Project: 35%
