Project Descriptions and points

Resume (50 points possible) Write your resume. This project is designed to teach you about writing your resume; it does not need to include your real life personal job experience. If you do not have a job history at this time be creative and include what you would like your resume to include in 5 to 7 years. Your resume must include your name, address, phone, email address, other contact information, job experience (include dates MM/YY, name of company, city, state, job title and a detailed description of what you actually did), education, other accomplishments (awards, recognition, volunteer activities), and special skills (technical skills, foreign languages, etc.). If you have several “other accomplishments”, you may list them separately on an “Accomplishments Page”. Include detail about each job experience; describe what you actually did at each job.

While information discussed in class is to help you with preparing your personal resume and should be used as a guideline, resumes are very personal self-promotional tools and the format may vary; however, for this assignment make sure you include all of the information required and the format should be very similar that as discussed in class. For this assignment, develop a resume to promote yourself and one that you feel comfortable with to talk about with a prospective employer. Resume will be 1 to 2 pages, single spaced; appearance, spelling and grammar is important and will be included in grading.

Oral Presentation: Introduction, Note Cards, Presentation (70 points possible) Prepare Note Cards and a 5 minute Oral Presentation. Your Note Cards will be part of your grade and will be given to the instructor at the end of your oral presentation. You may use visual aids as long as they don't overwhelm your presentation. Do NOT memorize your presentation.

Topic : Your presentation will cover a topic or event of which you are an “expert”. The purpose of the presentation is to promote yourself as an expert on your topic. Your presentation will include a short introduction which will be read by the introducer. Your presentation will include (1) A solid, strong opening. (2) A short history or background on the topic. (3) There will be a defined organization to the body of the presentation so the audience can follow along and maintain interest. And (4) your presentation will have a conclusion or summary.

The three (3) parts to this project are described below; points associated with each part are included (each parts makes up the total point value of up to 70 points). Read this carefully.

1). Introduction : Prepare a short introduction about yourself; the purpose of your introduction is to promote you as the qualified presenter. This will be read by an introducer (selected by the instructor) just prior to your presentation. Your introduction will tell the audience why you are qualified for this topic; this is your opportunity to promote and brag about yourself. Be sure to include your name and the title of your presentation in your introduction. Your introduction will be at least 175 words (minimum ½ page), and up to ¾ of one page in length. Double spaced. (up to 20 points)

2 ). Note cards : Using 3 X 5 OR 4 X 6 notes cards OR paper cut to simulate note cards, up to (4.25 X 5.5), half the size of a 8.5 X 11 sheet of paper, prepare notes for your presentation. Use only single words or very short phrases. Do not use sentences. This is not a speech. Do NOT plan on reading from your note cards; note cards are only used to help guide you through the presentation, should you need a little reminder. Bind the note card packet in some manner (clip, rubber band, string, ring, ribbon, etc.). Remember to include your name on your card packet. Neatness and obvious organization is a large part of this grade. TIP: Number each card for sequence, use a different color (perhaps a stripe at the top, or with your numbering) for each section of your presentation; it will help you to watch your time. (up to 20 points available).

3). Oral Presentation : It is recommended that your prepare an outline covering your presentation first. Your presentation will have a strong opening statement, a background or history of the topic, the body of the presentation which will contain detail, and a conclusion or summary.

Prepare your oral presentation as discussed above. Practice your presentation so that it flows naturally. Practice, but do not memorize your presentation. You will be graded based on the criteria covered during class and in the text, including, but not limited to, length of presentation, self-promotion value, audience attention, eye contact, movement, voice, enthusiasm, posture, etc. Be sure to state your name and the title of your presentation. If you use a Visual Aid, it must be large enough to be seen comfortably by the audience; Visual aids will be returned. Remember to practice your timing; timing is part of the grade. (up to 30 points available).

Participation, Attendance (30 points available) : Attendance and class participation are part of your grade. Your are required to attend classes and to participate during class in order to receive points in this area.

EXTRA CREDIT : Business Card OR Letterhead (05 points available) : Design a business card OR letterhead for yourself or for your business. Include your name and contact information. If for a business, include business and logo.
