Why Academic Advising is so important:

Achieving a college education depends on setting goals and taking appropriate steps to achieve them. The advising process helps you explore options, establish short-term and long-term objectives and develop action plans. Thoughtful planning, commitment to your goals, and active participation in the process are key elements to your success. Early planning is the key. We encourage you to seek academic advising in September, October, February, and March when student traffic is lighter and advisors have more time to assist you with your educational plans.

Preparing to meet with an Academic Advisor

You are responsible for your academic planning and need to be prepared for Advisement sessions. This includes bringing your degree check sheet, a list of questions, and a picture ID (required for placement testing).

Seven ways to prepare for your Advisement session:

1. You need to understand why you are coming to see an advisor. Your advisor will discuss this with you and help you understand the advisor/advisee relationship.



2. If you're a recent high school graduate, you may be eligible for a two-year President's Honors Scholarship, based on high school class ranking or ASSET placement test scores.



3. You must take course placement tests, administered by the Testing Services office prior to an advisement visit unless: (1) you have previous college coursework in Mathematics, English or Reading or (2) you plan to take courses not requiring placement tests. Practice ASSET and ACCUPLACER tests are available online and in paper format from Testing Services.



4. Have official transcripts sent to GCC. Transfer students with previous college or university coursework should bring unofficial transcripts to his/her first advisement session.
• Transcripts from other Maricopa District Colleges: If you have taken courses from other Maricopa colleges that are a pre-requisite for courses at GCC, or you are seeking a degree from GCC, you must request these transcripts be sent to GCC through my.maricopa.edu.



• Transcripts from Non-Maricopa District Colleges or Universities: If you are seeking a degree from GCC you must request official transcripts from other colleges or universities you have attended. These transcripts must be sent directly from the previously attended institution to the GCC Enrollment Services Office (6000 W. Olive Ave., Glendale, AZ 85302). Students may not deliver official transcripts, even if they are sealed. They must come directly from the Registrar's Office (or equivalent) of the institution. Please note: there are two Glendale Community Colleges, one in Arizona and one in California. Make sure your transcripts arrive in Arizona.
5. If you have clear academic goals, be prepared to communicate them to an advisor. If you have plans to pursue a degree or certificate from GCC, bring the degree check sheet.
   
   

   If you're undecided about a GCC degree or certificate program, become familiar with the Arizona General Education Curriculum (AGEC) and begin to establish a "general academic path" to follow.

6. If you are undecided about a degree/certificate program, 4-year major, or career area, we strongly encourage you to seek Career Counseling prior to Advisement. You can start your career exploration by seeing a Career Counselor at the Career Express station in the Enrollment Center or scheduling an appointment with a Career Counselor in Counseling and Career Services.



7. You should become familiar with the online class schedule and select a tentative schedule of courses to review with an advisor.

  There's no such thing as a "dumb question." If you're not sure . . . ask someone.    :)

University Transfer Center
