Maintenance and Operations Updates

07/19/06: Construction Update #17

Colleagues,

Road Closure Alerts

As the College continues to remodel facilities and entrances to the campus, two road closures will be required to complete projects prior to the August 14th return of faculty and normal operations. These road closures will impact areas around the Enrollment Center and the Vogel Entrance near the Performing Arts Center. A brief description and timeline for each closure follows, along with a map depicting the areas impacted . We apologize for any inconvenience, but a little dust now will avoid major traffic issues when the campus population really increases in mid August.

Road Closure #1 - Along the East-West Loop Road south of the Enrollment Center

Beginning Thursday, July 20, 2006, the East-West Loop Road that traverses the south parking lots, past the horseshoe, to the baseball fields will be closed from the first (eastern most) entrance road off Olive Avenue to the SW corner of the Enrollment Center. This section, depicted in blue on the map (below), will be closed through Friday, July 28, 2006. Closure will allow Metro Mechanical and Jokake to install the new, west section of the water line that caused so much flooding around the O-5 Bldg last Fall.

Entering GCC Driving West on Olive Avenue, from 59th Avenue:

Essentially, employees and visitors will be able to enter the campus from Olive Avenue using the first entrance road from 59th Avenue. If you are driving west, this is the entrance before the traffic light at 61st Avenue. Those using this entrance must turn right into the O-5 Bldg. parking lot. Left turns from this entrance will blocked. Access and egress from the entrance controlled by the 61st Avenue traffic light will be denied–this entrance will be barricaded. Employees and visitors who have business in the Enrollment Center should enter the campus from the third entrance (western most) from 59th Avenue Olive, at the Baseball Fields.

Entering GCC Driving East on Olive Avenue, from 63rd Avenue:

Employees and visitors will be able to enter the campus from Olive Avenue using the first entrance road from 63rd Avenue. If you are driving east, this is the entrance at the Baseball Fields, before the traffic light at 61st Avenue. Those using this entrance should plan to use the parking lot near the Enrollment Center. Again, access across the horseshoe to the O-5 Bldg. and Bookstore parking lots will be denied. Egress to Olive Avenue via the road leading to the 61st and Olive Avenue traffic light will also be denied–these areas will be barricaded. Employees and visitors should plan on exiting the campus using the entrance-exit to Olive Avenue at the Basebsall Fields.

The Dial-A-Ride loading point at the top of the horseshoe will be moved to the SW corner of the O-5 Bldg.

Road Closure #2 - Vogel Avenue (also called Glendale Community College Drive) near the Performing Arts Center

Beginning Friday, July 21, 2006, the Vogel Road entrance into the campus (North Parking Lot) will be closed. Also closed will be the northern portion of the north-south access road between Sunnyslope and Vogel Avenues (from just north of the Desert Schools Federal Credit Union ATM machine to Vogel Avenue). Employees and visitors will still be able to access the ATM machine from Sunnylope Avenue, but no through traffic will be possible. These sections, depicted in red on the map (below), will be closed through Sunday August 13, 2006. Closure will allow the widening of this entrance (Bond Project #8), to include an additional lane into the campus, dedicated left and right turn lanes from the campus and the addition of sidewalks and ADA ramps on both sides of the road. This project will take up much of the parking lot behind the Performing Arts Center, thus this area will become a designated loading zone at project completion.

Again, your patience as the College staff and contractors continue to improve the campus is appreciated. Signage will be posted along 59th and Olive Avenues to help guide employees and visitors during the construction period. If you have questions or comments, please contact Chuck Jeffery (5-3698), Al Gonzales (5-3035) or Debra Palok (5-3536).
