08/05/02: Student Union Vs. Concrete!
GCC Team, Quick update: the next phase of the sidewalk demolition and construction will be focused on the north side of the Student Union and where it wraps around the west side of the old EC. Doing the work now will almost eliminate any impact on students and faculty when they come back for Fall Semester. The plan will have it all removed and back-poured no later than August 17, 2002. This will accommodate our returning faculty and reduce the inconvenience to most of us. After that phase is complete much of the demolition and construction will shift to a night schedule.I will submit that this project does not come with its problems. Noise, dust, and detours have become so much or our culture over the past few years that I too am getting fatigued by having to keep up with all of it. However, the necessity of this project is a no-brainer when you look at what it brings to us in terms of fire safety and the elimination of tripping hazards and smoother rides for those that require a wheelchair.
