Quick Master Planning Summary

The following is a quick update on Master Planning projects for GCC Main.

Public Safety Sciences Building

This summer has witnessed a flurry of activity surrounding this project. The second floor slab is now complete as is the framing of the interior classroom and office spaces. In the weeks ahead the exterior walls of the building will be installed. When completed, this will be the college's third multi-story building, adding 22,200 square feet of instructional and administrative space to the campus. The project remains on schedule for a Grand Opening in January 2010.

Please see Public Safety Sciences Construction Gallery #4 for a visual update of construction progress.

Business Building Remodel – Grand Reopening Celebrated August 18, 2009

This building is now complete and Jokake Construction has left the building. As you pass by the building you will observe the last pieces of furniture being installed and our own Information Technology and Media staff connecting and testing computer and media connections. Final touches to finishes and the appearance of sod, plantings and new outside landscaping complete the remodel of this 44 year old facility. For those unable to attend the Grand Reopening Ceremony, please access the short video (links below) that captures the character of the building an the transformation that occurred in 18 months time.

GCC North

Ever since the Grand Opening in August 2008, enrollment at GCC North has grown beyond all expectations. In order to accommodate the larger student population, the college is now adding 320 new parking spaces. Dibble Engineering (http://www.dibblecorp.com/) and ALR Construction, Inc. are hard at work on alternates 6 and 7 (just south of the Central Plant), which will add 85 spaces by August 21st. An additional 235 spaces west of the Instruction Building-Central Plant area will be completed in September. Concurrent with the addition of more parking, the City of Phoenix has agreed to the installation of a traffic signal at the main entrance.

Please see GGC North Parking Expansion Gallery #1 for a visual update on construction progress.

Directional Signage

Over the years, the College has steadily improved its signage. Marquees and low wall monuments now identify the campuses to community and clearly identify the Glendale Community College and GCC North campuses as one of the Maricopa Community Colleges; exterior building signs inform students of the disciplines contained within; and at GCC North, exterior signage also provides a link to the history and cultures of Arizona. But sadly, good GCC Main campus directional signage has been absent ............ Until now.

As you arrive on the GCC main campus this Fall, seven new directional kiosks will guide students and employees around. Wing shaped, bright red and silver, these kiosks sport campus maps on both sides, clocks to keep us on time, and totems atop each kiosk (up to five) serve as guide posts to the most popular facilities (like the Enrollment Center, Dr. John F. Prince Library and the Student Union). These kiosks were sited after a thorough analysis of pedestrian flows across and around the campus and include provisions to meet the special access needs of mobility challenged students, employees and visitors.

Kiosks are located:

  1. North-South mall close to Green Bean Café patio, Life Sciences Bldg.
  2. Grass area north of the T-1 Bldg., by the fire lane.
  3. North-South mall (red social space) east of the Math Bldg.
  4. Central mall slightly NE of Testing and Disability Services Bldg.
  5. Area slightly NW of Campus Safety Bldg.
  6. East-West mall north of the O-1 and O-2 Bldgs., SE corner of the Library
  7. East-West mall near Humanities Bldg.

Kiosks are also lighted at night. As the college continues to grow and future budgets allow, more kiosks will be installed on the campus and in the parking lots. Please see Directional Signage Gallery #1 for a visual update on project progress.

Fitness and Wellness Building and Life Science Annex

Though these projects are much smaller, significant progress has been made improving both the Fitness and Wellness Buildings and Life Sciences Annex. Three classrooms in the Fitness and Wellness Buildings received new tile floors, paint and furniture. Storage systems for the aerobics rooms are also being looked at, and rest room floors have been cleaned and the grout restored with the new SaniGLAZE™ product. SaniGLAZE™ (http://www.saniglaze.com/) has been used in rest rooms in19 other buildings across the campus, providing a cost effective, "green" method for refurbishing and maintaining old and new facilities.

Fitness and Wellness Classroom

For those of you who used the labs in Life Sciences Annex (old Life Sciences Building), you will be familiar with the water leak that developed last year. That leak has been located and repaired. Floors will be refurbished in effected rooms and wall and ceiling finishes improved. With enrollment numbers climbing, these labs will be essential to providing quality science instruction and promoting student success.

In Memoriam – John Sazama 1952-2009

Not all of us had the pleasure of working with John Sazama, Assistant Director of Facilities Planning and Development for Maricopa and Project Manager for Glendale Community College during the last two capital bonds. A quiet, unassuming man, John blended easily into the Glendale campuses. Here, he willingly shared his passion with all of us, the development of educational environments: classrooms, labs, offices, study spaces, and extracurricular "sticky" space; all designed to promote student success.

In design meetings, John always championed ideas and inclusivity. No idea was beyond discussion, and every member of the team was encouraged to speak up. After all, this was the group of people who should contribute to design, and would use and maintain what was built. Every meeting was an educational delight, and I believe John learned as much from us as we did from him.

Over the course of 15 years John led 14 major projects. The remodel of the Library Media Center and Student Union, the construction of a new campus at GCC North, the construction of a state of the art Life Sciences Building, and the remodel of the new Business and Information Technology Building are but five examples. Many of these projects won and continue to win design and engineering awards; all were designed to be energy efficient and sustainable.

We are deeply honored that he is part of our history and indebted for his contributions.

    Summary

In closing, let me express the College's sincere appreciation to those who have shared ideas, expertise and time toward the master planning process, development of the College's Project Lists, educational specifications, review of proposals and selection of architects and construction firms. Every attempt has been made to be inclusive, and the College will continue this approach as we plan, design and construct each project. If anyone desires a copy of documentation for any specific project, please email me and I will provide a copy or direct you to an on-line link. Please stay engaged. With your continued participation and ideas, GCC will become what we dream.
