Quick Master Planning Summary
The following is a quick update on Master Planning projects for GCC Main.
Public Safety Sciences Building
This summer has witnessed a flurry of activity surrounding this project. The second floor slab is now complete and framing of the interior classroom and office spaces has begun. On Friday, June 12, a 10,000 gallon water tank that will support Fire Science training was placed under the training plane on the east side of the facility. In the coming weeks, framing will be completed and the exterior walls of the building will be installed. When completed, this will be the college's third multi-story building, adding 22,200 square feet of instructional and administrative space to the campus. The project remains on schedule for a Grand Opening in January 2010.

Business Building Remodel – Grand Reopening Set For August 18, 2009
Remodeling continues at an accelerated pace on this building. Inside the classrooms, new tile ceilings, accent walls and colorful carpet schemes effect a dramatic, modern look to this 40 year old learning space. A raised floor on the first level adds flexibility for furniture placement and the enhanced use of technology. The east side courtyard is quickly shaping up, to become sticky space where our students and faculty can relax, interact, and continue the learning process outside the classrooms. Substantial completion will be achieved on July 10th, and move-in activities are scheduled for July 13th.

GCC North
Ever since the Grand Opening in August, enrollment at GCC North has grown beyond all expectations. In order to accommodate the larger student population, the college will add 320 new parking spaces. This project will begin in June and be completed in September. The first 90 spaces should be completed before Fall classes begin. Concurrent with the addition of more parking, the college is coordinating with the City of Phoenix for the installation of a traffic signal at the main entrance and a bus stop on the campus.
New Landscaping – Behind Fine Arts Building
Some of you have asked about recent activity behind the Fine Arts Building. Once the home of Choice Hotels' Call Center, the space was recently empty, guarded by a lone tree, reminiscent of some John Ford movie set. But all of that is changing. An arroyo appeared on the north edge of the site, and large white circles (not alien landing zones) marked the location of future trees, which were then planted last week. Actually, this project will tie together the Public Safety Sciences and Life Sciences projects, making the north entrance to the campus much more inviting. Please see Landscaping Improvement Gallery #1 for a visual update on project progress.

Summary
In closing, let me express the College's sincere appreciation to those who have shared ideas, expertise and time toward the master planning process, development of the College's Project Lists, educational specifications, review of proposals and selection of architects and construction firms. Every attempt has been made to be inclusive, and the College will continue this approach as we plan, design and construct each project.
