Course Competencies
The syllabus you create for your class will be based on the Course Competencies defined by Maricopa County Community College District.Competencies serve the following purposes:
- they define the minimum information that must be included in each course,
- they are a basis for articulation with the State's universities,
- they drive the certification requirements for most programs, and
- they are a key resource for all assessment instruments.
It is very important to know where you can get a listing of these competencies!
MCCCD maintains an on-line competency and course outline database for approximately 8,000 academic and occupational, credit courses taught in the District. The competencies and outlines for your class are listed here!
There are two ways to access this database. Let's start with the easier of the two:
Method 1:
Find your course in GCC's
Class Schedule and click on the course number, e.g.
ENG217.
The link will take you to competencies for that specific course, as published by the District Curriculum office.
Method 2: Go to the District Curriculum web site and follow the instructions to find your course. This same site provides a means for tracking competency changes over the years (competencies are reviewed and updated by Instructional Councils) and for cross-referencing competencies among courses.
