How to Become a Registered Nurse (RN)

GCC participates in the MaricopaNursing program, a consortium of Maricopa community college nursing programs. MaricopaNursing at GCC provides several ways to become a Registered Nurse (RN):

  1. Associates of Applied Science in Nursing (AAS): 4-semester program; eligibility to apply for licensure as an RN is granted after completion of AAS degree requirements.

  2. Concurrent Enrollment Program (CEP): Fast track your nursing degree to become a registered nurse! With the GCC/NAU partnership, you can earn your AAS and BSN degrees at the same time in the Concurrent Enrollment Program (CEP). The CEP enables you to finish faster, save money, and complete your education at GCC. In-state tuition for the University portion of the CEP is less than $20,000. Students who complete all pre-requisite and co-requisite coursework for the MaricopaNursing, universities and meet GPA requirements are eligible to apply for this program. Learn more at the CEP website.

  3. Honors Cohort: Available to students eligible for the Arizona President’s scholarship; admission only in fall. Follow a course of study following graduation from high school that allows graduation with an associate’s and bachelor’s degree in under 5 years at a significantly decreased cost!

  4. Advanced Placement: Limited to transfer students from other nursing programs, LPN’s and Paramedics.

Students are admitted in fall and spring semesters to one of following 3 cohorts:

  1. Traditional: Classes generally Monday-Friday
  2. Weekend: Classes generally Fridays and Saturdays

After submitting your application and while waiting for placement in MaricopaNursing, consider completing co-requisites and recommended courses below. The recommended courses are useful classes that will help you in the nursing program. Also, if you are planning to pursue your BSN after graduating from GCC nursing, these courses are required in many RN to BSN programs.
