Refreshed Building Welcomes Honors ProgramNow that Honors is in its new home in the 07 building, I have had the opportunity to reflect on all of the WONDERFUL people in our GCC community who have had a part in supporting the building renovations, this move, and the Honors Program generally. I honestly don't know where to begin thanking people.
Clearly, without Al Gonzalez, Steve Azevedo, Sandi Reyes and many other valuable friends in Facilities Management, Crafts and OIT, we would not be in this wonderful space. It has truly been a privilege to work with these individuals and others.
Jeff Necker, Chett Gunkel and Scott Kozakiewicz are just a few of those I can acknowledge as space does not allow identifying everyone who helped develop this project into the beautiful space that it is today. So many people work tirelessly to ensure that we have superior facilities and to make our job in serving students so much easier. It has been a delight to get to know you through this project. We cannot thank you enough for all that you have done and continue to do in support of our GCC community.
Our administrative team has also been key in this endeavor. Thank you very much, VPs Natale, Sanchez and Rogers, for your continuing support of our GCC Honors Program. We sincerely appreciate your commitment to this shared space for Honors faculty, students and staff. Without your support, this would not have become reality. This space already means so much to the students in creating community and fostering continued faculty-student engagement outside the classroom.
Additional thanks needs to go to VP Rogers and VP Natale for stepping in to find funds to support GCC's Project Ayuda service students. As you may know, we were fortunate to have been awarded a subgrant last year, and we have many students continuing their participation with AmeriCorps in service to our local community. Even though these students are continuing their work this academic year, we did not have any funding to support the administration of the program; nevertheless, VPs Natale and Rogers identified college resources for hiring two part-time students to facilitate these continuing service efforts and to continue GCC's compliance with the subgrant terms. Thank you!
The Enrollment Center and GCC North house staff are also very deserving of thanks. Co-workers in recruitment, advising, registration, marketing, financial aid, testing and scheduling - most especially Mary Blackwell, Laura Krueger, Jeff Glemba, Lois McCort and Jackie Serna - have all been instrumental in supporting the Honors Program not only during the move but also every day. You all truly demonstrate what a team effort this is to serve students continually, repeatedly and joyfully! We appreciate you more than you will ever know.
Honors faculty, thank you for all that you have done in support of the Honors Program and for all that you will do with this new group of students. Our GCC colleagues in all of the other service areas have gifted us with a terrific foundation, and we all stand ready to continue helping students in any way possible.
Moving into the 07 building and the daily interactions across the college supporting the Honors Program truly illustrate the concept of team work, and I am proud to be part of the GCC team! Thank you. You are each appreciated more than can be expressed. ---submitted by Jennifer Lane, Honors Program director
