Hope Ruled at Job and Internship Fair

More than 800 job seekers achieved quality face time with more than three dozen potential employers Oct. 10 in the Student Union. One hour prior to the start of the three-hour event, Scott Schulz, GCC director of Career and Employment Services, delivered a Job Fair Strategies seminar in the Dr. Joe Griego Counseling & Career Services Center.

This is the first job fair at GCC in two years, “Schulz says. “We wanted this to be more than a branding opportunity for companies. In order to participate, employers had to come with real job openings or internships. The fact that so many employers responded and were eager to participate is a good sign of the economic times. We are happy with the employer turnout as well as all the student and community participation.”

Lillia Mrza, 20, president of Associated Student Government, said she came looking for global health related internships because that is the best way to get experience and get a foot in the door. She expressed hope because the American Red Cross took her name and contact info. She added that it has been hard to find paid opportunities.

Martin Rosenthal, 57, changed his career from art and substitute teaching by completing an accounting certificate at GCC two years ago.

“I was encouraged by conversations with the Arizona Department of Transportation and City of Peoria at the Job Fair,” he said, adding, “Many people my age are returning to school.”
