Reduce Waste This Year
We're starting off the new year with a new way of looking at the GCC waste stream. Recycling has increased from 40.88 tons (81,760 lbs.) in 2010 to 116.98 tons (233,960 lbs.) in 2011. We almost tripled our prior year's recycling! Now it's time to start reducing our waste. The Zero Waste pilot program is an initiative to minimize waste, maximize recycling and reduce consumption. The pilot program is limited to 200 volunteers and will be implemented early this spring. Participants give up their seven-gallon waste container and for a one-gallon. The smaller, Zero Waste container, which clips to the side of the recycle bin, is a visual reminder to reduce your waste quantity each day. Those who participate empty their own waste containers into large receptacles located in common areas or outdoors. Offices of participants will be identified with a window cling of the Zero Waste logo. This will be a symbol to the custodial staff that waste services are not required for that office. The Zero Waste containers don’t have plastic liners but can be rinsed clean. This program has the potential to reduce plastic usage by 200 liners per day or 4,000 per month. To participate, complete the Zero Waste Participant Form. Zero Waste bins are available while supplies last! If you also need a recycle bin, please note your request in the comments box. Bins will be distributed in early February to kick off the 2012 RecycleMania competition. Click for more info about the program. Thank you for your continued support of the GCC Recycle Program. --- submitted by Chanda Fraulino, Recycling Program Coordinator |
