GCC First-Year Student RealityFor the past couple of years, I have been sending out a PowerPoint called "College 101" alternately titled "This is not 13th Grade," based upon research by Dr. Drew Appleby (Univeristy of Indiana/Purdue University). I realized last year that there might be some differences between the college expectations and realities of community college students and Dr. Appleby's university students, so I asked 99 of our GCC North students "What do you know about college NOW that you DIDN'T know before you started?" I grouped their answers into 10 categories: time management, grades, teachers, freedom, social, personal responsibility, coursework, classes, other and summary statements. The answers range from insightful -- "I know there is more work involved, but it's working for something you want" -- to revealing -- "Hotter chicks."
