Campus Celebrates Fall Convocation

Time of Transition:  Change Curiosity Challenge Courage was the theme of this fall semester’s Aug. 15 Convocation. Campus offices were closed so that staff and faculty could attend beginning with 7:30 a.m. socializing over light breakfast fare. The event was streamed to GCC North so that they could most efficiently be a part of the event.

The convocation began with an opening welcome by the college’s new president, Dr. Irene Kovala, who discussed some of her personal and professional background and encouraged all to take opportunities to meet her and share their experiences and suggestions. There are two gatherings to choose from this week. A campus Meet the New President Reception from 1 – 3 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 16 in SU 104 and the Introduction of President Irene Kovala to the Community from 4 – 6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 18 in SU 104.

Also featured at convocation, new faculty and staff were introduced to the GCC family by vice presidents Ron Natale, Greg Rogers and Alberto Sanchez. And, faculty members Brandon Cleworth and Bel Winemiller were presented with medallions and certificates recognizing their 2011 NISOD Excellence Awards from the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development. Announced was Dr. Carlos Nunez-Noriega’s selection by the Victoria Foundation for the Dr. Dr. Alfredo G. de los Santos, Jr., Outstanding Latino Faculty in Higher Education Award (see the full story under Academic Affairs).

Informing and updating campus, Dr. Alka Arora Singh and Christine Moore discussed GCC’s reaccreditation, the Higher Learning Commission’s visit and our self-report.
