Drupal Web Platform Landing at GCC

GCC's two CAS departments -- College Application Services and College Advancement Services -- are working to update the college's website. This update will include new technology for delivering our Web pages and, while we're at it, further progress with the branding and functionality of our Web pages.

Why are we embarking on this large project? Currently, users across campus employ a variety of tools to maintain their department's Web pages. This is not an ideal situation for delivering efficient technical support or training, and it has become virtually impossible to refresh the look of our pages quickly. The solution? A new platform for delivery of our website - Drupal.

Drupal is an open source product that has been embraced by many institutions including the White House and some of our MCCCD sister colleges, such as EMCC for their public website and MCC for their employee intranet.

A website committee of staff, faculty, students and administrators will oversee the development of our new Web platform. Some of the responsibilities of this committee are to consider and approve changes to the website and to develop standards for the look and feel of various types of pages. The primary goal is to create a transparent process for ongoing development of our website to keep it current, modern and engaging.

If you maintain content on our website, we will contact you regarding training on Drupal editors for managing your pages. Drupal's content editor is a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) tool that works directly within your Web page, making it easier for you to visualize your finished page as you type. If you have an interest in the GCC website, you are encouraged to attend any of the committee meetings and suggest ideas for consideration. Meetings will be open; check your email for upcoming meeting announcements this fall. -- submitted by Theresa Hilding, director, College Application Services
