The Writing Center offers
students free 30-minute appointments with a faculty member to
discuss their writing. Most students bring in assignments that they're
currently working on, although they can also ask about prewriting, writing
resumes, taking essay tests effectively, general study skills, etc.
Any writing in any class -- lab reports, research papers, business
writing, and so on -- is fair game.
How to Make an Appointment
Sign the Writing Center Appointment Book at
the West Information Desk in HT2.
Phone reservations will not be accepted.
appointments are accepted if no other student has already signed up for
Appointments are for one 30-minute session (and, normally, only one per week,
although we can sometimes make one-time exceptions to that).
Fill out the Appointment Slip and take it with you to remind you of
your session. The Writing Center phone
number is on the slips, in case you need to cancel an
appointment. Students who make appointments
and don't keep them (and don't cancel them, either by erasing their
names from the appointment book or calling the WC) won't be allowed to
make another appointment for at least two weeks. This seems harsh, but
otherwise we get a high number of no-shows. That means other students
who could have used the time miss out.
When You Come to Your Appointment:
- Please bring a legible copy of any work you
- Bring the instructor's handout/requirements for
the particular assignment.
Note that the Writing Center is set up to
help students who are currently working on a single assignment.
Students who need ongoing help with general English or writing skills
should use the tutoring services offered by the
Center for Learning instead.
Electronic Writing Center
Students who can't make an
appointment can submit their essays electronically. A faculty
member will spend 30 minutes critiquing it, and then email the advice to
them, usually within 48 hours. Click to access the
Electronic Writing Center.
