Gauchos Beat NMMI to Improve to 2-2
A strong second half propelled the Glendale Gauchos to a 2-2 record on Saturday with a 47-33 win over New Mexico Military.A blocked punt by Streeter Turner set up QB Jon Brown's first of three rushing TDs on the night to give GCC an early 7-0 lead.
But NMMI played tough and built a 19-7 lead by halftime. A fumble on the opening drive helped push NMMI's lead to 26-7 before a brilliant comeback by the Gauchos.
Down 33-27 early in the 4th quarter and on the NMMI 1 yard line, fullback Maka Tuafa picked up a fumble and scored to give the lead back to the Gauchos, one they would never give back.
The Glendale defense didn't budge and got the ball back into the hands of Brown and the offense. RB Jon Greer took a reverse to the house and Jon Brown's 53 yards TD pass to Mike Hall sealed the win for the Gauchos.
Brown threw for 194 yards and 1 TD to go along with 158 yards rushing and 3 TDs.
The defense was led by safety Dallas Nichols who had 9 tackles and 2 PBUs. LB Jordan McFadden had 7 tackles and a sack and CB Avery Boykin blocked a NMMI field goal that kept points off the board.
Glendale improved to 2-2 while NMMI fell to 3-2. GCC has a bye this week and faces Eastern Arizona at home in two weeks.
