1988 National ChampionshipTeam Honored
On October 25th, during half time of the homecoming football game, the 1988 National Championship Football Team was honored for their accomplishments. Many players from that team were in attendance and were happy to be recognized on the 20th anniversary at their Alma Mater. Joe Kersting, the head coach for the Gauchos during this time, accepted the honor of speaking during the presentation. This team had many 'firsts' for the Gaucho Program during the 1988 season.
- First team to beat Phoenix College
- First team to beat Snow
- First team to beat Ricks
- First team to beat Dixie
- First team to win a bowl game
- First team to win the Western States Football League
- First team to go undefeated
- First team to win the National Championship
- First team to be inducted into the Hall of Fame (6 teams in the history of the NJCAA are in the Hall of Fame)
He not only recognized this team for what they did while at GCC, but what they have done since. Several of the players went on to play in the NFL, and others are now doctors, teachers, and coaches themselves. This 1988 team set a great example for what coaches try to instill in their student-athletes on and off the field. This team set the standard for what the Gaucho Program still represents to this day.
