With one more week to go before classes begin again at GCC, winter and spring athletics are in full stride, swing and shot.Men's and Women's basketball are set to jump back into conference play when they host the Apaches of Cochise College on Wednesday. The Women's game will start at 5:30 pm, with the Men set to tip immediately following the Women.
Baseball and Softball have started their pre-season workouts with the opening games for both squads quickly approaching. For Head Coach Dave Grant and the Gaucho baseball team the action starts with back-to-back double headers at the Matador Classic in Yuma January 25 & 26. The baseball team will play their home opener against conference rival South Mountain on February 1.
The softball team led by head coach Rebecca Schweitzer, will begin their 2008 schedule with a trip into the desert as well. The Gauchos will participate again in the Great Western Shootout, January 31-February 2 in Yuma. The Gauchos will then play their home opener on Tuesday, February 12 when they host the Vaqueras from Central Arizona.
Track and Field has started their workouts for a January 26th meet at Paradise Valley Community College. The 2008 schedule for the Men and Women with head coach, Ralph Neighbors is highlighted by the NJCAA indoor meet in Illinois March 6-9, The Orange Cost Classic in Costa Mesa, California April 11 and the Mt. Sac Invitational on April 12 in Walnut, California. In addition to their cross country travels, the Gaucho track teams will host the Region I championships May 6 & 8th.
Finally, the golf team is taking full swing at their pre-season preparations as they are set to open the 2008 season, under the direction of head coach Rick Jolley on February 17 against Pima at Rio Rico Golf Club.
On the court, on the field and on the track, the Gauchos are set up for a great start to the 2008 athletic year.
