Bates and Gauchos continue early roll

Sophomore earns National honors; Gauchos take down Aztecs

It was a banner week for the Gaucho Volleyball program, and they still have games to play this weekend. Monday, Sophomore Middle Blocker, Ashley Bates (Mountain Ridge HS) was named ACCAC co-player of the week for the now #13 Gauchos The accolades didn't stop there. Prior to their match with Pima on Wednesday, head coach Lisa Stuck was informed that Bates was named as the NJCAA DII National Player of the Week as well. "We are really happy for Ashley." said Stuck. "She has been a key to our early season success. When the whole team is playing well like we are, it's always great to see our players recognized in that way."

Top that? Bates and the Gauchos did just that defeating the Aztecs from Pima in 4 games (30-25, 30-22, 27-30, 30-18) to move their early season mark to 4-0 atop the ACCAC. "We are playing great team volleyball right now and that's been our key." added Stuck. "We still are working through some things but wins are wins and we have earned the ones we have so far." The Gauchos went into play Wednesday with a new #13 ranking in the NJCAA poll, up one spot from their pre-season mark of #14. Conference play will be tough as always in the upcoming weeks for the Gauchos as they will travel to #2 Chandler-Gilbert next Wednesday for the first of two meetings with the Coyotes, and then the first of two meetings with #7 Phoenix College. "This weekend will be a good gauge of where we are and what we need to improve on."

This weekend as coach Lisa Stuck was referring to is the Scottsdale Invitational Tournament where the Gauchos will face tough competition from all over the country. The Gauchos will face defending division I National Champion Iowa Western College (currently DI #3) to open the classic on Friday at 2:15 pm.
