GCC Hosts Grand Opening of Life Sciences Building
Life Science students who are studying biology, nursing or psychology at GCC this semester are enjoying the new Life Sciences building that enjoyed a grand opening in mid-January. Numerous dignitaries from GCC, the Maricopa County Community College District, GouldEvans Design and DPR Construction, and many community members attended the festivities.
The three-story, 63,000-square-foot building contains classroom space for 300 students, 72 faculty offices, nine biology labs, a vivarium (animal lab), four nursing observation pods, a large amphitheater, meeting rooms, a working greenhouse and a small café. The charming café features food service and seating on the ground floor and additional seating on an open second floor mezzanine that overlooks the lower floor. A two-story glass wall affords both eating levels a beautiful view of the campus and brilliant natural lighting. The building boasts numerous "green" features including water-efficient landscaping. Speakers from GCC, GouldEvans and DPR presented a brief program in the front courtyard west of the building. After the program, the audience entered the building to enjoy a buffet in the bi-level café and guided tours of the state-of-the-art edifice.
